This research report examines aspects of Siamese court life in the seventeenth century, as portrayed by various European residents and visitors in their letters, reports, and published works. Although flawed, these sources remain rich repositories of historical dalt on early modern Siam. The author has pieced together and account of a royal court, which, like most other courts, was much concerned with ritual splendour and material magnificence. The extant western source materials also tell us about the interests, tastes, and whims of the kings, thus filling in gaps in our knowledge of seventeenth century Siamese history.
